Best Songs of 2019 : Part 1

LISTEN - June 23, 2019

The melody in this song feels like the summer before my senior year of high school.

The summer solstice has come and gone, meaning we are officially in the second part of the year. Yes, half of 2019 is gone and we are barreling towards 2020. It’s the perfect time to be reflective and set out fresh intentions for the year. In the spirit of mid-year evaluations, I am sharing what I deem to be the best songs of 2019 thus far. The top 5 songs pulled from my Q1 and Q2 playlists, that must be added to your summer playlist for road trip listening or poolside chilling.

“Trouble on Central” -Buddy | A harsh reality weaved into a beautiful melody.

“Dance With Someone!!!”- Busty and the Bass | Love this insanely funky song, but I just saw a live performance of this song, and it’s a total Rick Astley like experience.

“Can’t Hardly Wait” – Justin Townes Earle | Sometimes a cover is just as good as the original. This rendition feels like a cool breeze on a hot day, salty skin and simple adventures.

“The Jangling Man” – The Cleaners from Venus | This song swirls up so much nostalgia, and I was only just introduced to The Cleaners from Venus, but the melody in this song feels like the summer before my senior year of high school.

“Lost on You” – LP  | I have a total crush on singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi and this song. The emotion in the delivery twists the echoing pain of unrequited love and rejection. I could roll around in the self-indulgent lamented pain that drips from every word. #obsessed

BONUS: “Viktor Borgia” – Stephan Malkmus | This song is awesome, but the comments on the music video, if read with love – are flipping AMAZING. My favorite: “When you need to make a Dadtronica video to embarrass your teenage daughters but don’t feel like changing out of your lawn mowing outfit.” – Luke Larsson on YouTube

Enjoy the above tunes and more on my Q1 & Q2 2019 Playlists. I’ll be back in December to share Q3 & Q4.

In the meantime, let me know who I should look up or listen to. I’m welcome to suggestions.

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – DORMANT VOLCANO

LISTEN - August 2, 2018

Q2 2018 Spotify Playlist | Dormant Volcano

I’m practicing this radical truth thing which is incredibly uncomfortable and yet healing

I seem to always use playlist publications as a time to give a little life update. So, if you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I’ve had a rocky Q2 of 2018.  At the end of March, a bunch of dirt was stirred up in my life and I had to start confronting a lot of pain and anger from my past. I’m practicing this radical truth thing which is incredibly uncomfortable and yet healing, so in the last few months, I’ve been supporting (with the help of my sister) my estranged father. Trust that the emotional and at times physical demands  (I’ve unloaded two large stuffed storage units in the last 2 months) of that relationship is incredibly draining.

But I’m sick and tired of being so god damn tired. I’m done with thinking and talking in circles. Yes, I don’t LOVE my life right now, and I feel so off track and removed from my center. Yet, I know I am the only one that can change things. I’m a firm believer in positive action yields and attracts positive results. I don’t know what exactly I’m searching for, but I know I want to be at a higher vibration – so here goes me sharing and putting some positivity out into the world with a fun new playlist.

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – J’AI NE PAS FRENCH FRIES

LISTEN - April 18, 2018

I just got out of my French class, but by the time you read this “just” will no longer be relevant.

I’m also currently craving french fries. By the time you read this, the sentence will still be relevant as I’m always craving french fries. Perhaps when you read this, I will have satiated my craving momentarily, or still be yearning for their salty goodness.

However, I created a playlist that I’ve aptly titled “French Fries” that has the songs that peaked my curiosity in Quarter 1 of 2018, and surprisingly has a lot of French tunes.

à la prochaine, prendre plaisir | see you, enjoy!

p.s. At the end of 2017 and start of 2018, I was also working on my “WAKE UP BEKKA” playlist that I thought I’d share as well. That playlist is always taking good “wake up” songs, so feel free to listen and leave a recommendation.

MY 2016 MIXTAPE

LISTEN - December 29, 2016

We spotted this amazing rock art on New Years Day 2016 in Malibu

I have a new years day tradition that I started 10 years ago while driving down the Califonia coast. My radio was turned off and as it was New Year’s Day, I declared that when I turned on my radio, whatever song was playing was the song of the year. I don’t remember what the song was ten years ago, but this year it was “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money. I’m still not completely sure how it applies to 2016, but this fun tradition with its shaky ability to predict the overall theme of the year is still something I look forward too.

Now that it’s the end of the year, I’ve compiled all my monthly mixtapes into one collection. A 7-hour mixtape of what I listened to in 2016, basically my audio diary.  If you’ve never listened to any of my mixtapes, my 2016 mixtape is a solid place to start.

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Lifetime Movie

LISTEN - December 2, 2016

New playlist time! November was a good month and apart from what the title of this playlist might indicate, most of the songs on my Lifetime Movie playlist are pretty mellow. So why Lifetime Movie? Well, I binged watched the recent Gilmore Girls revival that discussed Lifetime movies, and that triggered me going down a Lifetime Movie wormhole on YouTube. Some things just feel quintessentially fall and Lifetime movies are one of those things for me.

This may just be one of my favorite playlists to date. Enjoy!

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Team Apple Cider

LISTEN - September 29, 2016

It’s Autumn!! My favorite season of the entire year. I love the crisp cold air and the influx of east coast fall essentials that make no sense in Southern California. It’s been averaging 90 degrees this week but I won’t let a little thing like global warming prevent me from celebrating the most magical time of the year. As everyone else is getting jazzed on PSL’s aka pumpkin spice latte’s, I’m over on team apple cider. Never could get into pumpkin spice lattes, but cider is like a delicious apple orchard in my mouth. The catalyst for false memories of picking apples in a gorgeous orchard in my oversized sweater and chic leggings – cue the slow motion while I skip through the orchard with a basket of apples swinging in the air.

Enjoy this new playlist!

Team Apple Cider Playlist : 57 min | “Impossible” – Moon King / “Car – Water Version” – Porches / “The Past Tense” – infinite bisous / “Fill in the Blank” – Car Seat Headrest / “Wherever You Are” – Winter / “All I Know” – Still Corners / ” Lonely Richard” – Amen Dunes / “Give Up” – American Wrestler / “Ice Cream and Sunscreen” – Marth / “Take This Body” – Gill Landry / “Me, Myself, & I” – De La Soul / “New Friends” – Haybaby / “Filthy and Fried” – Drive-by-Truckers / “The Ledge” – Fleetwood Mac / “Divine Idylle” – Vanessa Paradis / “Rise” – Katy Perry

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Drive At Dusk

LISTEN - July 11, 2016

This playlist is inspired by the golden hour, the California coast, and the magical feeling of driving at dusk. I personally hate driving west at dusk as you will be blinded by the sun. But it’s undeniable that there is a special something during the summer time when it’s 7:45pm and the sun is still peeking over the horizon with a cotton candy sunset.  This isn’t a beach wave inspired playlist, cause I’m not a huge surf rock fan – but it does remind me of long summer days as a teenager and the breath between day and night.

Drive At Dusk Playlist : 1hr 15min | “Come To Your House” – Bouquet / “Cherry” – Chromatics / “Kiss the Screen” – Nite Jewel / “For You” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Free Time” – Teen / “Failling” – Bouquet / “Me and My Arrow” – Harry Nilsson / “In Limbo” -Teen / “In The Sun” – Hibou / “Under a Rock” – Waxahatchee / “Rattlesnake” – Fog Lake / “Outlaw” – Sweet Spirit / “Change of Heart” – TOPS / “I Want to Grow Up” – Colleen Green / “Without You” – Rainbow Arabia / “Le lac d’or (feat. Melody’s Echo Chamber) – Moodoid, Melody’s Echo Chamber / “Too Old to Be a Punk Rock Prodigy” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Dissolve” – Hibou / “Lovers Rock” – TV Girl / “Art/ Work” – tomemitsu / “Chess” – Petite Noir

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – THAT NYQUIL DAYQUIL LIFE

LISTEN - May 3, 2016

April was intense! Most of the month was spent working till 1am in the morning whether that was in front of my computer or on a polo field. We, Bowerbird and I, worked the Coachella Record Store again this year; but the twist was I had to put in all the new inventory into the record system before the festival. So in addition to my normal freelance work and getting ahead of my absence, I had the record store project on my plate. With stress at an all time high, my immune system flipped me the bird and I got pretty sick. By April 18th I was popping Dayquil and Nyquil like Judy Garland on the set of the Wizard of Oz – hence the title of this month’s playlist. My mixtape is a mixture of new music I discovered, remixes of old loves, and a sprinkling of Coachella. Everyone needs to listen to Mint Fields and Tei Shi – get on it!

“Let Me Sing You Love Songs” – Rachel Fannan, Brandon Intelligator / “How the Might Have Fallen” – Margo Price / “Fools Rush In” – Peggy Sue / “A Dot Running for the Dust” – Helvetia / “Two Hands” – Twin Fires / “Genevieve” – Lucius / “Brief Pause” – On Planets / “Sparks” – Beach House / “This Is How We Walk On The Moon” – Arthur Russell / “Go Slow” – Tei Shi / “Anesthetic” – Into It Over It / “Petty Box” – MINT FIELD / “Two For The Road” – Henry Mancini

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – MATCHA GREEN TEA

LISTEN - March 30, 2016

With your understanding, I’m going to be putting out mixtapes only once a month. Instead of a collection of songs I’ve been listening to that week or every two weeks, I want to do a collection of songs I’ve been listening to that month. Personally, I enjoy listening to longer playlists I can get lost in while cleaning or buckling down on a project. I’m no longer feeling my 30minutes spurts of musical curation and would like to develop more robust playlists. When I was first making the playlists I’d try to theme them, but recently I’ve noticed the playlists end up creating their own story as many of the songs reflect a mood or sound I’m yearning for. I’d like to nurture this organic curation instead of trying to find songs that go together on purpose.

So without further ado, here is March’s playlist, Mixtape : Matcha Green Tea – named after the beverage I’m currently enjoying as I put this post together.

MADE YOU A MIXTAPE : PRICKLY PEAR

LISTEN - March 3, 2016

February wasn’t any easy month, but it was still filled with beautiful music and I was able to make you a mixtape. Aptly named “Prickly Pear” to channel the cute and the uncomfortable, it’s unintentionally female-driven with a few of my favorite fellas mixed in. Hope you enjoy some awesome tunes from the past and present that have been on repeat this month!
