Micro February Recap + New Playlist : Decade Dance

A micro February recap + New Playlist:

I’ve been burdened with deep thoughts ranging from “why have I limited myself as a writer” to “how do I incorporate more glitter into my makeup routine and wear lipstick on a daily basis.” Last month, Dan and I celebrated another rotation around the sun. We allowed ourselves to indulge in various alcoholic beverages and delicious, expensive dinners to celebrate. Our birthday month ending with one final friendship fueled bash at Clifton’s in Downtown LA.

The following day, surprisingly with little to no hangovers,  we explored Downtown LA on foot. We love walking around a city and getting a feel for its character when we travel, so why not do it in our backyard. It was an adventurous month filled with art, music, and lots of freelance work. My management of the freelance work caused a hiccup in my personal content production, and I feel backlogged with stories I want to share, video footage that needs to be edited. A never ending wave of ideas and inspiration that I am just writing down and saving for later because I’ve yet to find the time for execution. Yet, I feel a little disheartened and resentful to my idea bubbles. They just keep coming, and I haven’t figured out the time to actually work on them. This past weekend I saw a very astute doodle/ illustration about having ideas that elicited a bit of shame within my bones.

I am the girl in pink. What is worse is that I have a tendency to share my ideas before actual execution, which then make me feel like it isn’t the ideas yelling at me to finish them it is the world asking where that idea went. I’ve decided I’m going to stop sharing ideas out loud. Although I had this one idea, no, I shouldn’t say it. But it was an idea around ideas. Anyways, the real point of this post is to share February’s playlist before I’m too far into March. So without further ado … Decade Dance Playlist

FRESH START PLAYLIST | JANUARY

The first month of 2017 is in the books, and I feel like I’ve had a great start to the year. I’ve been buzzing off the fresh start a new year brings, and it has energized my creative efforts. I’m sure I’ve said this before, like every summer camp counselor remarking on their cabin of kids, but I think this is my favorite playlist yet. It’s filled with musicians and bands I’ve never listened to before and includes a few solid favorites, like Car Seat Headrest. I hope you enjoy my Fresh Start playlist and I’d love to know a band you’ve discovered this past month.

“Bondi’s Dead” by Lower Plenty was the first song Dan and I listened to in the new year.

It’s my tradition to note the first song of the year!

Awkward Stage Playlist

“I’ve been reading a lot of self-help stuff…” – said to my friend last Friday night in Echo Park.

This new playlist is titled Awkward Stage, as that’s been my emotional state for the last few month. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m going through my awkward teen years all over again. It’s been over a decade since I was 14 and as I’m in the midst of a condensed awkward stage I wonder, “does everyone go through this?  I should be able to deal better by now.” So as I was hanging out with my friend last Friday night and was feeling awkwardly self-aware, all I could share about the last few months was, “I’ve been reading a lot of self-help stuff.”

Fall is my favorite season, so I’m feeling hopeful about how 2016 will end considering it’s been rocky from the start. With the new season, I feel it’s time to stop working on this playlist and start something fresh.

Drive At Dusk Playlist

This playlist is inspired by the golden hour, the California coast, and the magical feeling of driving at dusk. I personally hate driving west at dusk as you will be blinded by the sun. But it’s undeniable that there is a special something during the summer time when it’s 7:45pm and the sun is still peeking over the horizon with a cotton candy sunset.  This isn’t a beach wave inspired playlist, cause I’m not a huge surf rock fan – but it does remind me of long summer days as a teenager and the breath between day and night.

Drive At Dusk Playlist : 1hr 15min | “Come To Your House” – Bouquet / “Cherry” – Chromatics / “Kiss the Screen” – Nite Jewel / “For You” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Free Time” – Teen / “Failling” – Bouquet / “Me and My Arrow” – Harry Nilsson / “In Limbo” -Teen / “In The Sun” – Hibou / “Under a Rock” – Waxahatchee / “Rattlesnake” – Fog Lake / “Outlaw” – Sweet Spirit / “Change of Heart” – TOPS / “I Want to Grow Up” – Colleen Green / “Without You” – Rainbow Arabia / “Le lac d’or (feat. Melody’s Echo Chamber) – Moodoid, Melody’s Echo Chamber / “Too Old to Be a Punk Rock Prodigy” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Dissolve” – Hibou / “Lovers Rock” – TV Girl / “Art/ Work” – tomemitsu / “Chess” – Petite Noir

MIXTAPE : MATCHA GREEN TEA

With your understanding, I’m going to be putting out mixtapes only once a month. Instead of a collection of songs I’ve been listening to that week or every two weeks, I want to do a collection of songs I’ve been listening to that month. Personally, I enjoy listening to longer playlists I can get lost in while cleaning or buckling down on a project. I’m no longer feeling my 30minutes spurts of musical curation and would like to develop more robust playlists. When I was first making the playlists I’d try to theme them, but recently I’ve noticed the playlists end up creating their own story as many of the songs reflect a mood or sound I’m yearning for. I’d like to nurture this organic curation instead of trying to find songs that go together on purpose.

So without further ado, here is March’s playlist, Mixtape : Matcha Green Tea – named after the beverage I’m currently enjoying as I put this post together.

Follow me on Spotify for all my playlist in one place!

Hope you enjoy some awesome tunes from the past and present that have been on repeat this month!

MIXTAPE : REFLECTION

My first mixtape of 2016! On new years day, I played the David Bowie radio station on Spotify while getting ready for our annual morning hike. I had decided to wear my Bowie t-shirt and dedicate the year to an inspiring man who embodies reinvention; ready to go into 2016 embracing the artist in me and committing to being a fearless version of myself. So when I heard Bowie passed away, I was devastated. Last Monday I was totally distracted and in a haze, but I moved on through the week with WWDBD on my mind, what would David Bowie do. I had been creating this playlist for a few weeks now and just today decided to frame it with two of my favorite Bowie songs, songs that jog some of my earliest memories.

Also, I wanted to share a new years game I play. I always seem to find myself at some point on New Year’s day in my car and I like to use my radio as a fortune teller. Before turning on the radio I ask the universe/ tell the universe the first song I hear will be a reflection of 2016, this year it was “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money. Read into it what you will.

“Fame” – David Bowie / “Take My Home Tonight” – Eddie Money / “Wild Horses” – The Rolling Stones / “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” – Chromatics / “Weird Little Birthday Girl” – Happyness / “There Is Nothing Left” – The Drums / “Class Historian” – BRONCHO / “Dream Talkin”- Family Trees / “Aideu Creature” – Andrea Balency / “Korean Food” – Frankie Cosmos / “Lazy Lover” – Brazilian Girls / “Oh! You Pretty Things” – David Bowie

MIXTAPE : MUSUBI

It’s the last day of 2015 and this is my last playlist of the year. I’m so happy I started these post after being inspired by one of my fav chick-a-dees on instagram, Meghan Alfano. It was nice to always have a playlist in the works or something I could just put on when getting ready for the day.  Now I have a collection of my favorite songs from the year to look back onto and sort of see my moods throughout 2015. I will certainly be continuing my playlists in 2016.

p.s.  A musubi is a slice of spam surrounded by rice and wrapped in seaweed.

What was your favorite playlist or music discovery in 2015?

“Insanely Jealous of You” – The Soft Boys / “Ghost Rider” – Suicide / “Girlfriend In A Coma” – The Smiths / “When Lightening Starts” – The Three O’Clock / “Tweeker Kidz” – The Aquadolls / “I Love You Too” – Darlings / “Pepsi/Coke Suicide” – Elvid Depressedly / “FloriDada” – Animal Collective / “Isn’t It Love” – Babes / “Ride On” – The Shivas / “Eyes of the Muse” – King Tuff / “Hippie Hippie Hourrah” – Jacques Dutronc

MIXTAPE : She Rocks!

So this playlist was inspired by Hella Nervous by Gravy  Train!!!!. I discovered this song on a playlist my fav YouTuber, Leighannsays, created on Spotify. Seriously that girl has some solid taste in music, through her playlists she always introduces me to a band or two I’ve never heard before. So, while I was ear binging on Gravy Train!!!!, it inspired me to start listening to my other favorite girl fronted bands. I had wanted to create a ‘She Rocks’ inspired playlist for a while, as an ode to an awesome KXLU radio show called ‘She Rocks‘ and well the timing was perfect. Hope you enjoy a few of my favorite female voices. Today, I added a bunch of songs from when I was just a babe exploring LA. I don’t know, I think I’ll just continuously add to this playlist as well, so follow it on Spotify. Parting words… Delta 5 has given me a false sense of musical ability and I sort of want to front a band for Bowerbird, he’s not totally on board with the idea.

‘Hella Nervous’ – Gravy Train !!!! / ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ -The Slits /’My Precious’ – Soko / ‘Oh Bondage, Up Yours!’ – X-Ray Spex / ‘Try’- Delta 5 / ‘Atomic’ – Blondie / ‘She Bop’ – Cyndi Lauper / ‘You’ – Delta 5 / ‘Invincible’ – Pat Benatar / ‘Picture This’ – Blondie / ‘Peter Pan Syndome’ – Soko / ‘Crimson Wave’ – Tacocat / ‘Adderall’ – The Coathangers / ‘Painted By Numbers’- The Sounds / ‘Monster Hospital’ – Metric / ‘I’m A Lady’ – Santigold / ‘ Riot Rhythm’ – Sleigh Bells / ‘Staight A’s’ – Sleigh Bells
