Playlist : Team Apple Cider

It’s Autumn!! My favorite season of the entire year. I love the crisp cold air and the influx of east coast fall essentials that make no sense in Southern California. It’s been averaging 90 degrees this week but I won’t let a little thing like global warming prevent me from celebrating the most magical time of the year. As everyone else is getting jazzed on PSL’s aka pumpkin spice latte’s, I’m over on team apple cider. Never could get into pumpkin spice lattes, but cider is like a delicious apple orchard in my mouth. The catalyst for false memories of picking apples in a gorgeous orchard in my oversized sweater and chic leggings – cue the slow motion while I skip through the orchard with a basket of apples swinging in the air.

Enjoy this new playlist!

Awkward Stage Playlist

“I’ve been reading a lot of self-help stuff…” – said to my friend last Friday night in Echo Park.

This new playlist is titled Awkward Stage, as that’s been my emotional state for the last few month. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m going through my awkward teen years all over again. It’s been over a decade since I was 14 and as I’m in the midst of a condensed awkward stage I wonder, “does everyone go through this?  I should be able to deal better by now.” So as I was hanging out with my friend last Friday night and was feeling awkwardly self-aware, all I could share about the last few months was, “I’ve been reading a lot of self-help stuff.”

Fall is my favorite season, so I’m feeling hopeful about how 2016 will end considering it’s been rocky from the start. With the new season, I feel it’s time to stop working on this playlist and start something fresh.

Drive At Dusk Playlist

This playlist is inspired by the golden hour, the California coast, and the magical feeling of driving at dusk. I personally hate driving west at dusk as you will be blinded by the sun. But it’s undeniable that there is a special something during the summer time when it’s 7:45pm and the sun is still peeking over the horizon with a cotton candy sunset.  This isn’t a beach wave inspired playlist, cause I’m not a huge surf rock fan – but it does remind me of long summer days as a teenager and the breath between day and night.

Drive At Dusk Playlist : 1hr 15min | “Come To Your House” – Bouquet / “Cherry” – Chromatics / “Kiss the Screen” – Nite Jewel / “For You” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Free Time” – Teen / “Failling” – Bouquet / “Me and My Arrow” – Harry Nilsson / “In Limbo” -Teen / “In The Sun” – Hibou / “Under a Rock” – Waxahatchee / “Rattlesnake” – Fog Lake / “Outlaw” – Sweet Spirit / “Change of Heart” – TOPS / “I Want to Grow Up” – Colleen Green / “Without You” – Rainbow Arabia / “Le lac d’or (feat. Melody’s Echo Chamber) – Moodoid, Melody’s Echo Chamber / “Too Old to Be a Punk Rock Prodigy” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Dissolve” – Hibou / “Lovers Rock” – TV Girl / “Art/ Work” – tomemitsu / “Chess” – Petite Noir

MIXTAPE : THAT NYQUIL DAYQUIL LIFE

April was intense! Most of the month was spent working till 1am in the morning whether that was in front of my computer or on a polo field. We, Bowerbird and I, worked the Coachella Record Store again this year; but the twist was I had to put in all the new inventory into the record system before the festival. So in addition to my normal freelance work and getting ahead of my absence, I had the record store project on my plate. With stress at an all time high, my immune system flipped me the bird and I got pretty sick. By April 18th I was popping Dayquil and Nyquil like Judy Garland on the set of the Wizard of Oz – hence the title of this month’s playlist. My mixtape is a mixture of new music I discovered, remixes of old loves, and a sprinkling of Coachella. Everyone needs to listen to Mint Fields and Tei Shi – get on it!

“Let Me Sing You Love Songs” – Rachel Fannan, Brandon Intelligator / “How the Might Have Fallen” – Margo Price / “Fools Rush In” – Peggy Sue / “A Dot Running for the Dust” – Helvetia / “Two Hands” – Twin Fires / “Genevieve” – Lucius / “Brief Pause” – On Planets / “Sparks” – Beach House / “This Is How We Walk On The Moon” – Arthur Russell / “Go Slow” – Tei Shi / “Anesthetic” – Into It Over It / “Petty Box” – MINT FIELD / “Two For The Road” – Henry Mancini

Flashback Friday : Interview with Jacob Duzsik of HEALTH

I just saw HEALTH at Coachella and thought it would be appropriate to pull this interview out of the archives.

Originally published on myfavoritemaoi.com on October 15, 2010

Nickname: Handsome Jake
Sign: Cancer

Favorite
Food: Burritos
Book: The Plague: Albert Camus.
Season: Summer

Q1. What is the best show (music) you have ever been too?
A1. Pearl Jam in 1991. I don’t even like them but it was one of the first shows I ever went to. My dad took me.

Q2. If you could live in any time period or be anyone dead or alive?
A2. who would you be or where would you go? The Idea of being someone else is pretty terrifying philosophically speaking.

Q3. What is something you hate doing, but must do anyways?
A3. Getting gas. Fucking hate it.

Q4. If you had to give up one of your 5 senses, which one would you abandon?
A4. Taste.

Q5. Most rewarding moment of your life thus far?
A5. The birth of my first daughter…hypothetically

Q6. If you owned a parrot, what would you teach it to say?
A6. I would not own a parrot.

Q7. How old were you the first time you got drunk? How was the experience?
A7. !2 years old, new years eve. I puked all over the ground outside my house and tried to clean it with the hose, but it just froze into pools, like giant puke ice cubes. My mom found them in the morning and was furious. It was awesome

Q8. Biggest Pet Peeve?
A8. I have too many to pick a favorite but for right now I’ll go with people who walk around whistling. Can’t fucking stand it.

Q9. What was your childhood ambition?
A9.To be a movie cop. Not to be a real peace officer or an actor, but just a fictional badass.

Q10. Is there any toy you really wanted as a kid but was never given? Did you ever buy it for yourself when you got older?
A10. Remember those footballs or soccer balls that had monster faces on them? Well I really wanted one, and for some reason my mom flatly refused. Never did figure out why.

Those nights out that feel like a dream, where the people are beautiful and life seems surreal. Everything was intangibly exciting. In the moment you wonder if your awake or asleep, closing your eyes to open them up and see that this place, this wonderland, is real. When I listen to HEALTH this is the feeling I am filled with. Their music would be the soundtrack to that night’s movie. It’s haunting, and yet so present. I’ve yet to have the delight of seeing HEALTH live but I could only imagine how hypnotizing the performance would become.

please listen to more HEALTH. They are currently touring with Crystal Castles in the UK and other various parts of Europe! Jealous.

MIXTAPE : MATCHA GREEN TEA

With your understanding, I’m going to be putting out mixtapes only once a month. Instead of a collection of songs I’ve been listening to that week or every two weeks, I want to do a collection of songs I’ve been listening to that month. Personally, I enjoy listening to longer playlists I can get lost in while cleaning or buckling down on a project. I’m no longer feeling my 30minutes spurts of musical curation and would like to develop more robust playlists. When I was first making the playlists I’d try to theme them, but recently I’ve noticed the playlists end up creating their own story as many of the songs reflect a mood or sound I’m yearning for. I’d like to nurture this organic curation instead of trying to find songs that go together on purpose.

So without further ado, here is March’s playlist, Mixtape : Matcha Green Tea – named after the beverage I’m currently enjoying as I put this post together.

MADE YOU A MIXTAPE : PRICKLY PEAR

February wasn’t any easy month, but it was still filled with beautiful music and I was able to make you a mixtape. Aptly named “Prickly Pear” to channel the cute and the uncomfortable, it’s unintentionally female-driven with a few of my favorite fellas mixed in. Hope you enjoy some awesome tunes from the past and present that have been on repeat this month!

GA: A Half Day in Athens

Athens, GA – October 19, 2014 / DAY 20 of #ontheroad1014

Our road trip had already been steeped in music history, having gone to the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville and Muscle Shoals in Alabama, so it’s to be expected we hit up Athens, GA as well (or at least that’s what Bowerbird felt). The day we visited Athens, we grabbed an awesome breakfast in Atlanta at the Rosebud café. When we picked the restaurant it was unbeknownst to us that the owner, Ron Eyester, was a contestant on Top Chef Season 12.  After our yummy breakfast I dropped off a few of my postcards, that invited people to tweet me while we were on the road, by the door and Ron was one of the awesome people that said hello!

Rosebud Breakfas

From Rosebud we drove over to the Martin Luther King Memorial Center also in Atlanta, it was extremely important to me that we explore the history of the civil rights movement while on our trip. We were going to go to Montgomery, AL before we went to New Orleans but my Atlanta friends told me it was better to experience the Martin Luther King historical sites instead. I’m glad they had suggested the memorial center; I was filled with sadness, joy and humility as I walked through the center seeing relics of segregation and reading Dr. Kings story. Next to the memorial center is Ebenezer Church, the spiritual home to Martin Luther King where he was baptized and was a minister till his passing. Inside the church, they play his speeches and sermons, Bowerbird and I sat for a while in a pew listening to his powerful words until it was time for us to head to Athens.

MLK Memorial Center

Now, I was completely oblivious to the Athens roots many of my favorite musical acts had come from, like the B-52’s, REM, Of Montreal, and Drive by Truckers. But Bowerbird knew about that Athens’ sound and wanted to see the city that gave birth to it. I made my own Athens artists playlist that’s below and there is definitely a common note. Seeing Drive by Truckers or Lucero while in the South was another goal of the trip, but their tour schedule never synched with our road scheduled. To add insult to injury, when we drove into Downtown Athens and found a parking spot, it happened to be right across a music venue advertising Drive by Truckers would be playing October 31.

Georgia Theater Athens GA

Athens is about an hour and a half away from Atlanta. We arrived just around the same time our breakfast was wearing off, 1:00 pm. We didn’t know where we were going, only that we wanted to explore, so we just started walking in a general direction down one of the streets. In our aimless wandering I spotted a sign saying “This Is It”, since at the moment I needed a restroom in my life, I took the sign as a sign that this was the place to go. Eventually, we came across an interesting area on Washington, where Low Yo Yo Record store and Clocked diner are located. First we grabbed a quick snack at Clocked, a colorful retro dinner that looks like it could be the post-party destination for a Love Shack rager. Then it was on to crate digging at Low Yo Yo, Bowerbird found a lot of records he wanted to purchase but because we were on a road trip we were afraid of buying vinyl and then leaving it in the car. The potential damage of goods just left in the car to be warmed up by the sun prevented us from many wine and vinyl purchases.

Clocked Cafe and Diner

Bowerbird and the shop owner geeked out over a few obscure bands. I picked up a silly bookmarker at the worlds tiniest art gallery located in a closet at the back of the store. We bought a few CDs as we didn’t bring any of our own music on the road; a bad idea for one’s data plan. And after about an hour and a half worth of record window shopping, we continued on to wander the streets of downtown Athens.

Low Yo Yo records in Athens, GA

We hopped into a few other vintage and record stores before settling into a pub/coffee shop that was located across from the college. There were a lot of students in there and since I had my backpack on me, I felt like blending in with the locals and busting out my laptop. While on the road I had every intention of blogging on a regular basis, little did I know that isn’t exactly easy when one’s sleeping arrangements doesn’t have wifi or my only downtime is right before bed at midnight (brain dead). So with our bit of downtime, I ordered a hard cider and wrote a blog post, TN:  Johnny Cash & Nashville.

Shopping in Athens GA

We headed back to Atlanta around 6:00pm and had every intention of grabbing dinner in the city, until an accident caused the highway to shut down and our hour and half drive turned into three and half hours. I felt terrible as our ETA kept changing and we had friends waiting for us in Atlanta. We got to our friends place around 10:00pm where they fed us Trader Joes quinoa stir-fry, we watched The Walking Dead, and went to bed.

If you’re visiting Atlanta, I highly suggest taking a day trip to Athens. It has a small town feel but a lot of unique shops and character. If it wasn’t a Sunday, Bowerbird and I might have tried to find a college rager to crash.

MIXTAPE : REFLECTION

My first mixtape of 2016! On new years day, I played the David Bowie radio station on Spotify while getting ready for our annual morning hike. I had decided to wear my Bowie t-shirt and dedicate the year to an inspiring man who embodies reinvention; ready to go into 2016 embracing the artist in me and committing to being a fearless version of myself. So when I heard Bowie passed away, I was devastated. Last Monday I was totally distracted and in a haze, but I moved on through the week with WWDBD on my mind, what would David Bowie do. I had been creating this playlist for a few weeks now and just today decided to frame it with two of my favorite Bowie songs, songs that jog some of my earliest memories.

Also, I wanted to share a new years game I play. I always seem to find myself at some point on New Year’s day in my car and I like to use my radio as a fortune teller. Before turning on the radio I ask the universe/ tell the universe the first song I hear will be a reflection of 2016, this year it was “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money. Read into it what you will.

“Fame” – David Bowie / “Take My Home Tonight” – Eddie Money / “Wild Horses” – The Rolling Stones / “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” – Chromatics / “Weird Little Birthday Girl” – Happyness / “There Is Nothing Left” – The Drums / “Class Historian” – BRONCHO / “Dream Talkin”- Family Trees / “Aideu Creature” – Andrea Balency / “Korean Food” – Frankie Cosmos / “Lazy Lover” – Brazilian Girls / “Oh! You Pretty Things” – David Bowie

MIXTAPE : MUSUBI

It’s the last day of 2015 and this is my last playlist of the year. I’m so happy I started these post after being inspired by one of my fav chick-a-dees on instagram, Meghan Alfano. It was nice to always have a playlist in the works or something I could just put on when getting ready for the day.  Now I have a collection of my favorite songs from the year to look back onto and sort of see my moods throughout 2015. I will certainly be continuing my playlists in 2016.

p.s.  A musubi is a slice of spam surrounded by rice and wrapped in seaweed.

What was your favorite playlist or music discovery in 2015?
