SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Decade Dance

A micro February recap + New Playlist:

I’ve been burdened with deep thoughts ranging from “why have I limited myself as a writer” to “how do I incorporate more glitter into my makeup routine and wear lipstick on a daily basis.” Last month, Dan and I celebrated another rotation around the sun. We allowed ourselves to indulge in various alcoholic beverages and delicious, expensive dinners to celebrate. Our birthday month ending with one final friendship fueled bash at Clifton’s in Downtown LA.

The following day, surprisingly with little to no hangovers,  we explored Downtown LA on foot. We love walking around a city and getting a feel for its character when we travel, so why not do it in our backyard. It was an adventurous month filled with art, music, and lots of freelance work. My management of the freelance work caused a hiccup in my personal content production, and I feel backlogged with stories I want to share, video footage that needs to be edited. A never ending wave of ideas and inspiration that I am just writing down and saving for later because I’ve yet to find the time for execution. Yet, I feel a little disheartened and resentful to my idea bubbles. They just keep coming, and I haven’t figured out the time to actually work on them. This past weekend I saw a very astute doodle/ illustration about having ideas that elicited a bit of shame within my bones.

I am the girl in pink. What is worse is that I have a tendency to share my ideas before actual execution, which then make me feel like it isn’t the ideas yelling at me to finish them it is the world asking where that idea went. I’ve decided I’m going to stop sharing ideas out loud. Although I had this one idea, no, I shouldn’t say it. But it was an idea around ideas. Anyways, the real point of this post is to share February’s playlist before I’m too far into March. So without further ado … Decade Dance Playlist

Going Back to the Record Store

In a moment of brilliance, I figured out how to work at the record store in the desert again this year. Back in January I had said I was going to have to be an adult, but today I figured out how to have it all. Well, attempt to have it all while being incredibly disciplined with my diet and supplement intake. The record store in the desert is not an easy job, the elements and long days drain every ounce of energy from my aching bones, but it is also is addictive and invigorating. The waxtastic team is like a family after working 4 weekends on the polo fields together, and I didn’t want to miss out on all the fun. Plus with a wedding and apartment hunting in my future, I could really use the extra income. So, I’m going to once again live out my Empire Record dreams (#ilovelucas) and possibly see Beyonce live.

Just another wacky Wednesday in the life of Bekka

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – FRESH START

The first month of 2017 is in the books, and I feel like I’ve had a great start to the year. I’ve been buzzing off the fresh start a new year brings, and it has energized my creative efforts. I’m sure I’ve said this before, like every summer camp counselor remarking on their cabin of kids, but I think this is my favorite playlist yet. It’s filled with musicians and bands I’ve never listened to before and includes a few solid favorites, like Car Seat Headrest. I hope you enjoy my Fresh Start playlist and I’d love to know a band you’ve discovered this past month.

“Bondi’s Dead” by Lower Plenty was the first song Dan and I listened to in the new year.

It’s my tradition to note the first song of the year!

MY 2016 MIXTAPE

We spotted this amazing rock art on New Years Day 2016 in Malibu

I have a new years day tradition that I started 10 years ago while driving down the Califonia coast. My radio was turned off and as it was New Year’s Day, I declared that when I turned on my radio, whatever song was playing was the song of the year. I don’t remember what the song was ten years ago, but this year it was “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money. I’m still not completely sure how it applies to 2016, but this fun tradition with its shaky ability to predict the overall theme of the year is still something I look forward too.

Now that it’s the end of the year, I’ve compiled all my monthly mixtapes into one collection. A 7-hour mixtape of what I listened to in 2016, basically my audio diary.  If you’ve never listened to any of my mixtapes, my 2016 mixtape is a solid place to start.

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Lifetime Movie

New playlist time! November was a good month and apart from what the title of this playlist might indicate, most of the songs on my Lifetime Movie playlist are pretty mellow. So why Lifetime Movie? Well, I binged watched the recent Gilmore Girls revival that discussed Lifetime movies, and that triggered me going down a Lifetime Movie wormhole on YouTube. Some things just feel quintessentially fall and Lifetime movies are one of those things for me.

This may just be one of my favorite playlists to date. Enjoy!

Lifetime Movie Playlist : 1hr and 14mins | “Gamble” – Lucy Rose / “El Condor Pasa (If I Could) – Simon and Garfunkle / “California” – Joni Mitchell / “You’re Out Wasting” – Andy Shauf / “Denial” – I Break Horses / “I Gave Myself a Science Lecture” – Alligator Indian / “The Killing Moon” Echo & the Bunnymen / “Every Songbird Says” – Sam Beam, Jesca Hoop, Iron & Wine / “Katie I Know” – Marissa Nadler / “Boxer” – Lovers / “Same Mistakes” – The Echo-Friendly / “Hey Cool Kid” – Cloud Nothings / “Awkward” – FIDLAR / “Real Love” – Big Thief / “Paper Cuts” – Broadcast / “Porch Projector” – Ducktails / “Breathe (2am)” – Anna Nalick

Desert Trip Diary & Bonus Style Video

Desert Trip was a crazy experience. Once again Dan and I headed out to Indio to work at the vinyl oasis in the desert. 4 days of camping and festival life is pure exhaustion, but always worth it because of the priceless memories. The amazing thing about Desert Trip was the energy, everyone there felt like they were a part of something greater. A Coachella it can be very self-centered and all about what you’re wearing or who you saw, but at Desert Trip, it was really about experiencing the music and icons that were taking the stage.  It was about being a part of music history, and not just a fleeting moment. Below is my Desert Trip diary with a bonus video of my attempt to do a “style” video.

In Desert Trip diary part 2 I share parts of Roger Waters political performance to highlight the artistry of the production, NOT make a political statement. I also share clips of the less political parts of his show. But honestly, his entire performance had a political agenda. He forced his audience to think and feel, even if that feeling was anger cause they completely disagreed with him.

I have NO POLITICAL AGENDA. My agenda is to share cool music, art, and adventures. Please try to put political feelings aside when watching Roger Waters performance and enjoy the spectacle of lights, colors, and an inflatable animal.

Also, I decided to try something new and do an outfit of the day video that is now my blog post bonus video. The outfits are from over the two weekends. Weekend 1 – I had no idea what I was doing. Weekend 2 – I asked Dan to film some more detail shots. Maybe I’ll do more in the future, you can only get better if you keep trying. Don’t let looking like a fool ever stop you from doing something new, embrace the awkward.

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Team Apple Cider

It’s Autumn!! My favorite season of the entire year. I love the crisp cold air and the influx of east coast fall essentials that make no sense in Southern California. It’s been averaging 90 degrees this week but I won’t let a little thing like global warming prevent me from celebrating the most magical time of the year. As everyone else is getting jazzed on PSL’s aka pumpkin spice latte’s, I’m over on team apple cider. Never could get into pumpkin spice lattes, but cider is like a delicious apple orchard in my mouth. The catalyst for false memories of picking apples in a gorgeous orchard in my oversized sweater and chic leggings – cue the slow motion while I skip through the orchard with a basket of apples swinging in the air.

Enjoy this new playlist!

Team Apple Cider Playlist : 57 min | “Impossible” – Moon King / “Car – Water Version” – Porches / “The Past Tense” – infinite bisous / “Fill in the Blank” – Car Seat Headrest / “Wherever You Are” – Winter / “All I Know” – Still Corners / ” Lonely Richard” – Amen Dunes / “Give Up” – American Wrestler / “Ice Cream and Sunscreen” – Marth / “Take This Body” – Gill Landry / “Me, Myself, & I” – De La Soul / “New Friends” – Haybaby / “Filthy and Fried” – Drive-by-Truckers / “The Ledge” – Fleetwood Mac / “Divine Idylle” – Vanessa Paradis / “Rise” – Katy Perry

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Awkward Stage

“I’ve been reading a lot of self-help stuff…” – said to my friend last Friday night in Echo Park.

This new playlist is titled Awkward Stage, as that’s been my emotional state for the last few month. Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m going through my awkward teen years all over again. It’s been over a decade since I was 14 and as I’m in the midst of a condensed awkward stage I wonder, “does everyone go through this?  I should be able to deal better by now.” So as I was hanging out with my friend last Friday night and was feeling awkwardly self-aware, all I could share about the last few months was, “I’ve been reading a lot of self-help stuff.”

Fall is my favorite season, so I’m feeling hopeful about how 2016 will end considering it’s been rocky from the start. With the new season, I feel it’s time to stop working on this playlist and start something fresh.

Awkward Stage Playlist : 53 min | “Anxiety” – Preoccupations / “Shut Up Kiss Me” – Angel Olsen / “Another Loser Fuck Up” – Christopher Owens / “Rodeo Queen” – Escondido / “Cigarettes and Red Wine” – Ella Fence / “Apogee – RJD2 Remix” – Tycho, RJD2 / ” I Go To Sleep” – Anika / “Poison & Wine” – The Civil Wars / “Can’t Remember” – Teen Body / “Bridges” – Nine Pound Shadow / “I Think You’re Alright” – Jay Som / “When To Let Go” – Violens / “Videotapes” – Blouse / “Soul Searching” – Shigeto

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – Drive At Dusk

This playlist is inspired by the golden hour, the California coast, and the magical feeling of driving at dusk. I personally hate driving west at dusk as you will be blinded by the sun. But it’s undeniable that there is a special something during the summer time when it’s 7:45pm and the sun is still peeking over the horizon with a cotton candy sunset.  This isn’t a beach wave inspired playlist, cause I’m not a huge surf rock fan – but it does remind me of long summer days as a teenager and the breath between day and night.

Drive At Dusk Playlist : 1hr 15min | “Come To Your House” – Bouquet / “Cherry” – Chromatics / “Kiss the Screen” – Nite Jewel / “For You” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Free Time” – Teen / “Failling” – Bouquet / “Me and My Arrow” – Harry Nilsson / “In Limbo” -Teen / “In The Sun” – Hibou / “Under a Rock” – Waxahatchee / “Rattlesnake” – Fog Lake / “Outlaw” – Sweet Spirit / “Change of Heart” – TOPS / “I Want to Grow Up” – Colleen Green / “Without You” – Rainbow Arabia / “Le lac d’or (feat. Melody’s Echo Chamber) – Moodoid, Melody’s Echo Chamber / “Too Old to Be a Punk Rock Prodigy” – Free Cake For Every Creature / “Dissolve” – Hibou / “Lovers Rock” – TV Girl / “Art/ Work” – tomemitsu / “Chess” – Petite Noir

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST – THAT NYQUIL DAYQUIL LIFE

April was intense! Most of the month was spent working till 1am in the morning whether that was in front of my computer or on a polo field. We, Bowerbird and I, worked the Coachella Record Store again this year; but the twist was I had to put in all the new inventory into the record system before the festival. So in addition to my normal freelance work and getting ahead of my absence, I had the record store project on my plate. With stress at an all time high, my immune system flipped me the bird and I got pretty sick. By April 18th I was popping Dayquil and Nyquil like Judy Garland on the set of the Wizard of Oz – hence the title of this month’s playlist. My mixtape is a mixture of new music I discovered, remixes of old loves, and a sprinkling of Coachella. Everyone needs to listen to Mint Fields and Tei Shi – get on it!

“Let Me Sing You Love Songs” – Rachel Fannan, Brandon Intelligator / “How the Might Have Fallen” – Margo Price / “Fools Rush In” – Peggy Sue / “A Dot Running for the Dust” – Helvetia / “Two Hands” – Twin Fires / “Genevieve” – Lucius / “Brief Pause” – On Planets / “Sparks” – Beach House / “This Is How We Walk On The Moon” – Arthur Russell / “Go Slow” – Tei Shi / “Anesthetic” – Into It Over It / “Petty Box” – MINT FIELD / “Two For The Road” – Henry Mancini
